幾年前，習近平問懂經濟的手下：
“什麼是中等收入陷阱？我總聽說中國面臨這個挑戰。“
手下回答：
“一個國家原來很貧窮，工資水平很低，於是他們生產的產品成本很低，在國際上很有競爭力。於是他們收入水平升高。
“收入提高了，生產成本就提高了，產品的競爭力就減少了。
“因為以往的貧窮落後，也因為他們的收入只是中等，財力無法和美國這樣的發達國家相比，他們無法在創新、高科技上趕上美國這樣的發達國家。後者雖然無法在勞動力成本上和窮國競爭，但靠高科技賺大頭。
“於是，他們就掉進了一個高不成低不就的陷阱，很長時間出不來：他們要在高科技上趕上發達國家，國民就必須有高收入，這樣才會有巨型企業投巨資研發高科技。但還沒等收入達到美國的水平，因為產品價格無法和貧窮國家競爭，他們的收入就已經無法上升了。
“這就好像你要致富必須買一輛皮卡，要想有錢買皮卡必須先致富。”
在《從習的性格和為人來預測中美博弈的未來》一文中，我揭示了習的農民境界。在《中國經濟的棺材上的最後一個釘子》一文中，我揭示了他這樣的農民遇到挑戰後會做出什麼樣的對策。順著這個思路，我們很容易理解，當習半懂不懂了什麼是中等收入陷阱後，他所作出的對策：
“這還不容易？把老百姓的收入水平打下去不就行了！"
這幾年，中國老百姓的生活越來越艱難，收入越來越低，中共幾千億、幾千億地印鈔刺激經濟，但從來不把錢給最貧窮的老百姓。現在你明白為什麼了吧？
因為這是習的目標！
因為在習的眼裡，中國現在的經濟狀態是最理想的：
第一，老百姓的收入越來越低，工廠付給工人的工資越來越低，所以像比亞迪這樣的巨型中國企業就可以用極低的價格在國際上佔領越來越多的市場份額。就是說，中國通過向貧窮方向開倒車的方式倒出了中等收入陷阱。
第二，因為老百姓的生活回到了溫飽線之下，他們的需求和期待值極低，給他們極少的醫療和福利，他們就可以繼續苟活，繼續當韭菜。
這樣一來，中共就可以把從國際上賺來的外匯的絕大多數都用來造軍艦、軍演（今天的軍演花了三百多億）、在國際上大撒幣買影響，在認為重要的領域投入巨資進行研發，和西方的私企投資研發的模式進行競爭並取得勝利。
一切都有解釋了，對不對？

This is good news for the U.S. China and the Chinese people are the biggest beneficiary of the U.S.-led globalization. Left to their own vehicles, they stand to benefit for years to come. The end result would be a prosperous and advanced China. It was the Americans who were left behind. But that has been brought to a halt. It is in the interest of the communist party to take what they’ve gotten and change course. Staying in the U.S.-led order was too great a risk. They need to carve out their sphere of influence and make sure they have the power to scare off the west. Could they bide their time for a few more decades and challenge the west with greater means then? No. It just might be too late.
At a time when Trump’s erratic behaviors risk losing allies and as countries begin to search for an alternative leader, it has now become clear that there is no alternative to the U.S.
The era in which China benefited from globalization at the cost of the American middle class and at the cost of the security of the party is over. From now on, the party and the American middle class will be the winners.
